Being a freelance designer can be a rewarding and lucrative career. But it can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to growing your business. You need to know how to promote yourself, manage clients, and create an effective business plan. With the right strategies, you can build a successful freelance design business.
Know Your Target Audience
Before you start marketing your design services, take some time to get to know your target audience. Who are they? What are their needs? What type of design work do they typically hire out? Understanding your target market will help you create tailored services and marketing materials that will help you stand out from the competition.
Invest in Quality Materials
When it comes to marketing yourself as a designer, you need to invest in quality materials. This includes things like business cards, a professional website, and other promotional materials such as brochures or flyers. Quality materials will show potential clients that you take your business seriously and that you’re a credible designer.
Utilize Social Media
Social media is one of the most powerful tools you have when it comes to promoting your services. Create accounts on the most popular platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Post engaging content regularly and use targeted advertising campaigns to reach new audiences. This is also a great way to connect with potential clients and build relationships with them.
Set Reasonable Rates
When setting rates for your services, make sure they’re reasonable. Research the going rates in your area and adjust your prices accordingly. Keep in mind that charging too much can scare clients away and charging too little can devalue your work.
Build an Effective Business Plan
Having an effective business plan is key to the success of any freelance design business. Your business plan should include things like marketing strategies, a budget, and goals for growth. It should also include specific steps you’ll take to achieve your goals. This will help you stay organized and on track.

The Freelance Manifesto
I’ve been a fan of Joey Korenman, the founder of The School of Motion, for many years. Before starting SoM Joey worked as a freelance animator and motion designer for various mograph agencies for many years.
A few years ago he published this book filled with tips & tricks on how to succeed as a freelancer. The book is written for freelance motion designers, but the principles laid out in the book applies to freelancers in all creative fields.
The book gives advice on everything from prospecting to client outreach and what to charge as a freelancer divided into different phases that builds upon each other. It’s a comprehensive guide and honestly one of the best books, I’ve read on the subject and I read it every time we’re away on vacation.
